The first person to coin the term grindverk or 'grindewerke' was the Icelandic poet Didda. grindverk are ofcourse extremely grateful to her, and in depth as nothing can describe grindverk more aptly as grindverk generates gyrating rhythms and non melodies so everyone can sing and dance to its music.

Them boys in grindverk have for a long time fancied working together. They have known each other for awhile as well. Siggi and Einar were in the Sugarcubes and Hilmar Örn And Einar were Frostbite and released one record together in 1993. Siggi has been musically active since the demise of the Sugarcubes, with his alter ego of Bogomil Font. And apart from grindverk has an album with DIP lined up. Wheras Einar Örn has been taking a sabbatical away from music. Not that his return to music marks a revolution in melodical thinking. Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson is a film music composer and won the Felix which is the European equivilant of the Oscar for his music for the movie 'Children of Nature'. 'Current93 and Hilmar released the well known album 'Island'. His period with Psychic TV is material for a whole book! But the fate of grindverk was decided when they met in a studio in Reykjavik in November 1997 to work on some tracks, and after spending considerable time in hooking the equipment up and drinking isoproponol by mistake. At the end of the day after doing no music, and in the process of packing the gear down, one button was accidentally hit and out came the tune which now is Gesundheit. They decided to continue packing down and the results: a 12 inch for fatcat records! what a story :)
What the FatCat saw fit to put to paper: Preceding their forthcoming FatCat album in early spring 1999. 'Gesundheit Von K' marks grindverk's debut release, and yet another new direction for the ever-expanding Fat Cat label. Comprising the Icelandic trio Einar Örn, Siggi Baldursson and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson (two former members of The Sugarcubes), this four-track 12" showcases the band's diversity - ranging from the post industrial funk of the title track, to the Pram-like, sublime jazz exotica of 'Kastrato'. The A-side features a stripped-down version of 'Gesundheit...' plus 'The Twit & The Tower', a stunning track reminiscent of seminal Factory outfit, A Certain Ratio, or the legendary 23 Skidoo, with its huge, driving percussion and eerie soundscaping. Composed through a process that mixes self-generated sampling (chopping up and replaying their own rhythms / riffs) alongside live playing (trumpets, bass, drums, electronics), grindverk's dark, writhing textures and sprawling, freeform instrumentals form a space that draws on the soundworld of '80s funk / post-industrialism (PIL, Liquid Liquid, Sheffield, etc.), yet rewires it into a '90s context, even the 21st century.
